Hofstra University proudly presents Step Afrika! 101, an exhilarating and educational dance performance that introduces audiences to the vibrant art of stepping.  Step Afrika! 101 offers a dynamic introduction to the art form — ideal for all ages and backgrounds. Through vibrant choreography and explosive footwork, the performance highlights the history and cultural significance of stepping, a percussive dance tradition rooted in African American communities since the early 1900s. A hallmark of stepping is audience participation — and you’re invited to be part of the show! Guests are encouraged to clap, stomp, cheer, and engage in call-and-response activities with the artists throughout the performance.

This event is made possible in part by generous support from the Joseph G. Astman Family Fund for the Hofstra Cultural Center.

STEP AFRIKA! 101 is presented in honor of Black History Month and in conjunction with the exhibition, Our Unfinished Revolution(s), presented by the Hofstra University Museum of Art. In the spirit of community service, attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items or basic toiletries — such as soap, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and toilet paper — to donate to the Hofstra Pantry and the Mary Brennan INN. These donations help support local families and individuals in need.
