Anne-Marei Mulgrew and Dancers Co presents Chapter 39 with Grit, Grace and Whimsy

Known for its “striking beauty, laugh-out loud humor, and thought-provoking imagery,” (Broad Street Review).
Anne–Marie Mulgrew and Dancers Company (AMM & DCO) presents its 39th Home Season Concert, June 27-28. The concert titled, Chapter 39 with Grit, Grace and Whimsy reflects on the Company’s rich history and explores themes of beauty, resilience, experimentation, joy, and uncertainty in today’s world.
Choreographed by Artistic Director Anne-Marie Mulgrew, the program features five dances and two dance films. Highlights include three premieres Quartet for the Living Part 2 to music by Warehouse Medicine, Solo for Four set to Zoe Keating‘s “The Last Bird” and “Mariage D’Amour “written by Paul de Senneville in the spirit of Chopin and Improvisation for the Future an 18-minute multi-media work in collaboration with percussionist Dr. Andy Thierauf performing live marimba.
Closing the program is Improvisation for the Future. It comments on today’s political and social undercurrents in an abstract fluid way, inviting viewers/audiences to create their own narratives. It opens with Thierauf on marimba with dancers appearing and disappearing behind a sculpture made from free-standing white umbrellas. It explores notions of community, individuality, and building, dismantling, and regrouping. It aspires to be a celebration of the fragility of the human spirit – the ironies, fantasies and joys. Dancers in white are juxtaposed against a solo figure in black. The umbrella as props is a nod to the Company’s Umbrella Dance presented in a new way for the stage. It explores the interplay of choreography, concept, space and music. Are the umbrellas shelters, weapons, tools or a source of delight?
Performers are Leslie Ann Pike (14-year company member), Joe Cicala (founding retired company member) who makes a rare appearance in Improvisation for the Future and new company members Shelby Bakota, Jasmin Cicchino, Nerissa Tunnessen, JA Kirk, and India Scott.
Stunned (2022) features four dancers and six chairs set to Steve Reich’s Nagoya Marimba’s played live by Thierauf. The program opens with Quartet for the Living Part I (2024) music by Drift Machine URUK with a colorful projection by Odili Donald Odita. The program includes selected films. This program is for all ages.
Program running time is 75 minutes with an intermission
There will be a short Q & A after the 3pm show.
